SENSE Charter School was built on the foundation of serving students and families residing on the Southeast Side of Indianapolis. We were recently made aware of a need through media and concerned parents. In staying true to our community commitment, SENSE Charter School will be adding new stops to accommodate unsafe walking conditions. New bus stop boundaries will encompass Keystone to the East, Raymond to the North, and Hoefgen to the South. Call 317-423-0204 for more information.

The SENSE Charter food pantry will be open tomorrow Thursday August 1st from 8:30-9:30 am and again 3:30-4:30 pm. This is open to all SENSE families only. Enter in the doors off the alley. Please note. There is heavy construction in the alley so you may want to park away from the pantry door and then just walk in. We are in need of volunteers to help run the pantry. Both sifts have openings. Contact Kate Voss kvoss@senseindy.org for more details.

Students of Ms. Galicia and Ms. Medina had an entire section on making Baggie Ice Cream. The project included research, adding decimals and fractions, learning English vocabulary, sentence structure, comprehension, participation, oral presentation, technology (they made a “how to” slide show), and a final quiz over everything. Then, they made the ice cream. Yum! Finally, the students presented their slideshow to practice their Oral Language Skills. This project made learning fun!

Members of the SENSE after-school program, the Environmental Investigators, toured Butler Univeristy’s Center for Urban Ecology Farm. Our club members gave an outstanding presentation about our school’s habitat to three other elementary schools and a panel of environmental experts. During their tour of the farm, they learned about cover cropping, permaculture, and farming with pollinators.
Our year-long Environmental Investigator’s Club is lead by our 6th grade science teacher, Elizabeth Johnson, and Rob Uppencamp, who has a student at SENSE and is a Senior Scientist and Risk Assessor at ARCADIS NV.

Through the great generosity of many of our SENSE families, we raise $643.75 with our recent Pennies for Patients campaign. Our annual Pennies for Patients drive benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Students learn about blood diseases and were visited by guest speaker, Gary Webb, who is a longtime volunteer at SENSE. He serves with the Board of Trustees for LLS, and is a blood-cancer survivor. Pictured here is April Wolcott, Co- Vice Principal of SENSE, Gary Webb and a LLS representative, Robin Shelton, to receive our contribution check. Thanks to all who contributed to this great cause to help end blood cancers in our lifetime.

Sergeant David Gard, from the Southeast District IMPD, came and spoke to our SENSE students, in grades K-3, concerning gun safety using the Eddie Eagle Gun Safe Program. The students were instructed that if they find a gun here is what they are taught do:
STOP!
Don’t touch.
Leave the area. Run away.
Tell and adult
It is important to talk with your child about gun safety. Whether an adult does or does not own a gun, it is important to know the rules for gun safety. Pictured here is Sargent Gard and Yvonne Navarro, SENSE Office Administrator and SENSE parent.

SENSE Charter now has a new Brownie troop that started this Monday. Thirteen 1st grade girls have the opportunity to participate where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls can build character and skills for success in the real world.
Pictured here is the Circle and Friendship Squeeze. The Friendship Circle is often formed at the end of meetings or campfires as a closing ceremony. Everyone gathers in a circle; each girl crosses her right arm over her left and then holds hands with the person on each side of her. Once everyone is silent, one girl starts the friendship squeeze by squeezing the hand of the person to her left. One by one, each girl passes on the squeeze until it travels clockwise around the full circle.

The Sew Sisters are helping us celebrate in great style the arrival of the chickens to SENSE come this Friday.
The Sew Sisters are a group of employees from Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance who gather regularly to lend their skills and talents towards creating amazing items for the community. They made beautiful blankets and pillows that can be given out to our families; as they have generously done before. But they went above and beyond, making fun banners for our Friday Spring Chicken Fest. Thank you Sew Sisters for your continued support!

As the weather is warming up, Garfield Park is gearing up for some summer fun! Every summer they offer a wide variety of art-themed summer camps ranging from all age groups and art mediums. We are currently accepting applications for two camp counselor positions to help us make this an unforgettable summer.
Give them a call at 317-327-7077 for more information about summer camps or apply directly at indy.gov/jobs.

EGGSELENT! - SRING CHCKEN FEST
They are coming! On Friday April 12th, SENSE Charter will be filling our own chicken coop with small flock of chickens. On that day, students will learn more about chickens and their care from our extraordinary sixth grade science teacher, Ms. Johnson. Then the classes will be taking turns with the care of our chickens until the end of May.
The chicken coop was donated by our good partners, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. Ms. Johnson is generously loaning us three of her own chickens to come live with us until summer break; where they will return to her flock until next spring. Perhaps there will be fresh eggs soon!

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, April 9th), due to the construction of the Red line on Shelby, Students who ride the Orange Bus in the mornings will see a change in their pickup times.
All stops will be picked up in the mornings, 10 minutes earlier. This will continue until further notice.

The third-grade Brownie troop at The Orchard School, co-lead by Tiffany Turner, was working on their World of Girls Badge. To earn the badge they needed to hear a story, tell a story, and change the story. So they decided to share the story Kristie Sweeney had posted to Facebook last fall about our food pantry needs.
After hearing the story, they shared it with their school community by hanging signs, passing out flyers, setting up collection bins, speaking about it at Town Hall Meetings, and writing articles for their weekly newsletter. As the collection bins got fuller, they got more excited and brought in many of their own donations. They not only helped our school community, but have brought more awareness to their community about our school. And for that we are most grateful for their generous support.

SENSE Charter School's Cub Scout Pack 18 participated in this year's Pinewood Derby on March 23rd. It was held at IPS School 63. Pictured here are some of the SENSE participants. For more pics form the event visit: https://www.facebook.com/pg/cacafterschoolprograms/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2330687020493870
The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for unpowered, unmanned miniature cars. Pinewood derbies are often run by chapters (packs) of the Cub Scouts program of Boy Scouts of America. With the help of adults, Scouts build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles. And then they decorate it.
For the price of admission to this year's event, people could donate non-perishable food. The food was then donated to SENSE Charter and School 63 to help keep their pantry stocked. Thank you Boy Scouts of America Crossroads District and Josette Crawford, District Director for School & After-School Programs!

One of our School Board members, Lee Lewellen, donated two more acoustic guitars and one classical guitar, along with guitar stands and straps. Mr. Lewellen has been very generous to SENSE. He previously donated multiple guitars and musical equipment towards supporting our music program. He has also donated new coats, sweaters and games. And for that we thank him ever so much!

Arthur's Music Store keeps SENSE rockin'! With a generous donation of $1,000, Arthur's Music Store continues to support our school's music program. SENSE PARENTS!!!
SENSE is excited to announce an online student registration/returning student validation system for the upcoming school year. The system is a secure and green process, which allows us to verify all student demographic, emergency and medical information for your child prior to the start of the new school year. The system will also allow you to electronically sign the annual permission forms for school district policies. In short, this online process replaces all the hard copy student registration and permission forms that your child brings home on the first day of school. There will also be a parent portal that will allow you to check your students progress online!
We will be sending the information out via Email…. But we don’t have email addresses for all of you. Please contact the school at your convenience to update or provide an email address we can use. You can also just write it down and send it in to the office with your student.
I know it’s early, but it takes a while to get the process set up and we want to make sure you do not miss out on any communications that might impact your students seat for next year!
Thanks!

Is my family eligible for assistance?
Registration opens for Christmas on October 22nd. Angel Tree is designed to help families whose income falls below the 2018 United States Poverty Guidelines. The qualified income level is dependent upon the number of persons in your household, so visit aspe.hhs.gov/poverty-guidelines to determine whether your family qualifies. If you are already planning to apply for Christmas assistance from another agency or organization, please do not apply for Angel Tree, too. Our goal is to ensure that as many central Indiana children as possible are able to have a special Christmas.
Which of my children are eligible for Angel Tree?
Children ages 0-12 who are residents of Marion, Hamilton, and Johnson County Indiana, are eligible for assistance through the Angel Tree program.
When can I sign up for Assistance?

Everyone was all smiles last night at the SENSE Family Skate Party at Wheels of Wonder (WOW). Thanks to all the families and staff for coming out to roll with us. We had a great turnout. And it was big fun for all! Pictured here is Erica Oakes and SENSE teacher, Rebecca Widener at the event. The next Family Skate Party is in May. Hoping you can join us then!

The Indy Eleven soccer supporters group, Slaughterhouse-19 (SH-19), helped us make our goal towards helping us feed the families of SENSE with a mammoth food drive at this Saturday’s game. Pablo Rodriquez is responsible for this act of kindness and generosity by hosting a tailgate where participants donated food and hygiene items. The result filled an SUV with much-needed items.
Pictured here is Betzi Hernandez and her son Diego Fuentes. And yes, they were as happy as they look to receive this generous donation. They helped to bring in the donated items into our pantry on Saturday and assisted in getting it shelved. Ms. Hernandez is the new SENSE art teacher. Her son Diego attends SENSE in the 4th grade.
Indy Eleven is an American professional team based in Indianapolis. The franchise plays its home games at Lucas Oil Stadium, with long-term plans of a new stadium in the city's downtown district. A heartfelt thank you to SH-19!

A team of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance employees spent the morning volunteering at SENSE as part of the company’s IFBI Community program.
Within a few hours the team transformed SENSE Charter. They worked on organizing storage closets, including the clothing and food pantries. They brought school supplies, food and hygiene items to donate to the school as well. The team put together shelving that they donated for better access to items. They weeded our grounds and created a study ramp for the garden area stairway, making it much easier to lead and unload.
And if that wasn’t enough, they donated a new refrigerator to our food pantry. Wow. So needed. So appreciated

Change to AFTERNOON Transportation procedure.
The construction on Shelby is going to block off the exit for the buses in the afternoons, so we will be moving Bus Pickup to the Front of the School (Pick up Only). The new process will start next Tuesday, Sept 4, 2018.
1. Car Rider Parents will stay in the parking lot and students will be loaded there.
a. Students will gather in the New Cafeteria (by the front office)
b. A Staff member will radio students to the Parking lot and load there.
2. Picker Upper and Walker Students will be dismissed to the OLD Cafeteria. (by the old front entrance)
i. They will exit out that door and be directed towards the north Cross walk if needed.
ii. Parents should wait by the old front entrance rather than by the new one.
3. Buses will line up in the “cut out”, in front of the school (on Barth), please do not block that area.
This should have little or no impact on our SENSE Neighbors on Barth. At most there might be one bus staged just south of the parking lot, but not in front of any homes.

An adult should accompany them at this time. It will allow the students to adjust in a less hectic atmosphere and the parents to meet the teacher.

Hey Everyone! I know it's early, but some of you may be thinking about the upcoming school year. The good news is that as long as you've informed us that your student is returning for the 2018-2019 year, your student will have a seat!
There is no need to apply through Enroll Indy for returning students.
If for some reason, you did not tell us your student is returning, or if something has changed and you now wish to return, just give us a call (317-423-0204) or stop by and we'll assist Thanks!!

In addition to the mural painting, SENSE staff and their families cleaned up the school grounds and put bug houses in our school gardens. The frame of the bug houses were created by our first grade teacher, Alison Sickbert. Shingles were added to the top of the houses and then they were filled with an assortment of twigs, wood chips, bricks, rolled up paper, leaves and blocks of wood with holes drilled into them. This is serves as a house for beneficial bugs in the garden and a work of art!

Mrs. Fisher’s 4th Graders begin their day showing belonging with unique handshakes! Each student came up with their own individual handshake. #fishersfabfourth #belonging #circleofcourage

SEX ABUSE PREVENTION SESSION FOR FAMILIES
Monday April 17, 2017
2:00-3:00 pm
SENSE Charter. Check into the front office.
Discussing sexual abuse with your child may be an uncomfortable and difficult thing to do, but the alternative puts them in potential harm. Chaucie’s Place’s Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program For Children™ has opened the door for you to start and continue these very important conversations with your child. You are invited to attend this informative workshop for parents and guardians. This is geared for parents with students in grades Kindergarten - third grade. But all are welcome.
As a caring family member, neighbor or youth worker, you might be in an ideal position to see something that is not right in a child’s life. You can also call the Indiana Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-800-800-5556 and your local law enforcement agency to make a report or visit Prevent Child Abuse Indiana’s website at www.pcain.org for more information. It offers straightforward lists of physical and behavioral indicators.
Please contact Kate Voss at 317.423.204 or kvoss@senseindy.org for more information

Our new car rider process will most likely continue through the end of the year. We will review it carefully over the summer and let you know if we’re able to make any changes and improvements for next year. In the meantime we don’t want anyone to receive any traffic or parking tickets so please be careful. If the car rider line in the Alley (by the Marathon), is stretching out onto Pleasant Run, please continue the line on the south side of Pleasant Run (facing east towards Shelby), and turning left into the Alley. This way the line will not back up and impede traffic on Shelby or block the entrance to our new Neighbor (Marathon Gas Station).

To all of our Parents and Family Members who Picked up their Children last week at SENSE…. THANK YOU!! I know it was hectic and confusing with the changes made to our “Car Rider” line, but you all handled it so well! The patience and understanding you showed to the Staff members (me included) while we worked out the process, was very much appreciated.

Pictured is a group of amazing woman who are employed at Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. They call themselves the Sew Sisters. They regularly meet to create sewing projects together. They have been creating pillows and blankets for our families along with donations of craft supplies and hygiene items for our food pantry.
The pillows pictured here will be sold at our May 5th Art Attack event. The money will go to support our art program long with helping to fund the new playground
